decarbonization goals.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of our mission and, as we look to continuously improve our own practices, we are very excited to share our Climate Strategy. We’re embarking on a 10-year journey to greatly reduce our carbon footprint; starting with a commitment to offset our direct operations and manufacturing, while setting and working towards ambitious science-based targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

Doing Some Good for Pets and the Planet

Open Farm's commitment to ambitious science-based decarbonization goals.

MEASURE

The first critical step in establishing our Climate Strategy was conducting a thorough analysis of our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Going forward, we are committed to continued measurement of our emissions as we track towards our carbon reduction goals. We’ll be disclosing our emissions data publicly on an annual basis to make sure we are completely transparent throughout this journey.

OFFSET

One of the first actions we're taking is offsetting emissions driven by our direct operations and product manufacturing. In doing so, we have carefully selected meaningful, high impact programs that provide verified carbon offsets, meaning the offsets are independently authenticated and the projects would not occur without financing.

The first offset programs we are supporting in 2021, include projects that contribute to the preservation of important ecosystems in the agricultural and forestry sectors. These projects have co-benefits that reflect our mission and are important to our food system, such as the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of endangered species.

GRASSLANDS
PORTFOLIO,
USA

This program preserves grasslands in Southeast Colorado and Northeast Montana. These areas are essential to many plant and animal species such as grizzly bears, grey wolves, badger and swift fox.

DARKWOODS FOREST
CONSERVATION
PROJECT, CANADA

Located in British Columbia, this project sequesters carbon reserves and protects essential habitat for dozens of at-risk animal species. By protecting ecosystems and conservation areas consisting of parks and forest lands, the project
also preserves numerous freshwater systems throughout the mountainous region.

TEAK
AFFORESTATION,
MEXICO

This afforestation project creates plantations to help remove large quantities of carbon dioxide next to land used for cattle farming. This contributes to climate change mitigation while providing employment opportunities for local communities.

REDUCE

Open Farm is committed to significantly reducing our carbon emissions over the next decade.

We have set science-based targets, pledging to reduce our absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% over the next decade, in line with the 1.5C goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Science-based targets require that we reduce our emissions even as we grow; an ambitious goal for any business, but especially challenging for a high growth company like ours. To meet these targets, we are actively building a plan to evolve our direct operations and manufacturing activities to drive significant reductions, which we will track, monitor and report on annually. We are at the same time, building a framework to reduce our Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions and will be implementing aggressive reduction targets around our procurement, delivery and transportation activities over the course of the next year.
